Q&A shows and Q&A cues

Tying Q&A to specific shows or cues so it opens and closes automatically.

Q&A shows and Q&A cues

Instead of manually flipping the override switch every time Q&A should open or close, you can build the timing into your show structure. Two mechanisms let you do this: Q&A shows and Q&A cues.

Both only work when the override is set to Auto. If you've manually set the override to Open or Closed, these automatic triggers have no effect.

Q&A shows

When you create or edit a show, you'll find a "Q&A show" toggle. When enabled:

  • Q&A opens automatically when this show becomes the active show
  • Q&A closes automatically when the show ends or the director switches to a different show

Use a Q&A show when an entire segment of your event is dedicated to audience questions — a panel discussion, an open mic block, a post-talk Q&A session. The moderator doesn't need to think about flipping Q&A on and off; it follows the show.

Q&A cues

The "Q&A" cue type is a built-in cue type (amber color). When a Q&A cue becomes the active cue:

  • Q&A opens automatically
  • When the cue advances to the next one, Q&A closes — unless a Q&A show is also active

Use a Q&A cue when you want a brief Q&A window inside a longer show — 10 minutes of audience questions in the middle of a sermon, a quick question slot between two speakers. Drop a Q&A cue in the right position in your cue list and it handles the open/close automatically.

Precedence and combining

Override always wins:

  • Override = Closed → Q&A stays closed, even if a Q&A cue or show becomes active
  • Override = Open → Q&A stays open, even outside a Q&A cue or show
  • Override = Auto → Q&A follows the cue and show flags

In Auto mode, the two flags are combined with OR logic — either one being true is enough to open Q&A. If you have a Q&A show active and a Q&A cue active at the same time, Q&A is open. When both end, it closes.

Tip

Most events use just one approach. A Q&A show works best for a dedicated segment; a Q&A cue works best for a brief window inside a longer show. You can mix both — they reinforce each other and the logic stays simple.

Setting them up

Q&A show: Create or edit a show → toggle "Q&A show" on. Visible in the Create show modal and the edit show modal.

Q&A cue: Add a cue and select the "Q&A" type from the cue type picker. The Q&A flag is set automatically when you choose this type.
